Introducing Josh Powley

Lee Evans, New Business Development Manager for IT@Spectrum spent time with Josh Powley from Sir Henry Cooper working on a project that involved Josh completing a site wide audit of the schools printing habits. As part of the project Josh had to collate his finding in excel and produce a PowerPoint presentation to the Headteacher and School Business Manager. Josh’s Headteacher was so impressed with his work and presentation that he asked Josh to present his findings to the rest of the school staff in March 2011.

Josh really enjoyed working with IT@Spectrum on the project and it gave him a great insight into the world of work whilst challenging his skills in areas like communication.

Lee was so impressed with Josh’s work attitude saying “he was punctual, disciplined, polite and hardworking, all the qualities an employer is looking for” in fact IT@Spectrum were so impressed with Josh they offered him an Apprenticeship once he had completed his GCSEs.

Josh started working for IT@Spectrum in September 2011 as “Office Technology Apprenticeship” and is attending college 3 days a week studying for the IT Level 3 Diploma. Josh loves his new job saying “everyone is so welcoming, helpful and supportive”. He has even been out on a job representing IT@Spectrum.

IT@Spectrum believes in working with young people to develop their employability skills and offers work experience as part of their commitment to education. They are so impressed with how this project worked out that they will continue to run it with the school.

Lee believes anything is possible for young people with a positive attitude and a willingness to work and encourages other businesses to get involved with their local schools through the Humber Education Business Partnership (EBP) as it not only develops employability skills but essential Life Skills that can’t be taught in the classroom.

Sally Kemp, HR Manager said “from a recruitment point of view this is a great way to get to know potential future employees and see if their skills and work ethic match up to their company expectations”.

The win was arguably the biggest win of his career for the Newlywed sprinter from Doncaster.

We also sponsored the East Yorkshire Classic on the Sunday, this was won by Team Sky’s Jeremy Hunt who led out of the final corner, coming in several lengths ahead of his rivals.

IT@Spectrum supports Hull TEENTECH event

The event was organised by the Humber EBP organisation and hosted by TV presenter Maggie Philbin

TeenTech showed young teenagers how their love for mobile phones and computer games could act as a gateway to a rewarding career developing the next generation of must have gadgets.

Even more importantly, this age group is extremely environmentally aware and TeenTech showed them the role science plays in helping the environment.

The IT@Spectrum team joined Cobus Communications along with more than 30 local & national employers in Science, Engineering & Technology to provide intriguing and practical encounters and activities.

The event allowed students to be inspired by “real” engineers, giving them the chance to find out what’s really involved in their work and how important subjects like Maths and Physics can be for future careers

Each team consists of a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner, with each team member handing over their timing chip (the baton) at the end of each leg.

The Humber EBP East Riding team offers direct support to schools by linking them with businesses in a range of activities. The awards are aimed at recognising businesses, young people, teachers and their schools and colleges for their achievements and outstanding support.

Over the years IT@Spectrum has worked closely with many local schools, to provide work experience placements, sponsorships, boards of governor’s roles, exchange schemes and IT awards projects.

IT@Spectrum is awarded the ‘Most Supportive Employer’ award

To take part in the IT Diploma students had to apply for the position, be interviewed and then if successful were offered the work experience position. The aim of this was to make it as ‘real’ to working life as possible.

The successful students then joined IT@Spectrum and work began on their set projects. The students then had to present their findings to a senior leadership at school, where they were evaluated and graded as part of their coursework. We are pleased to report all students over achieved their predicted grades for this project.

This work experience project lasted for two months, with the students spending time with various members of our staff. Tim added “Our aim was for the students to have a fulfilling, practical and interesting project which was a ‘real life’ experience”.

This project proved successful and will be extended to other schools later this year and into 2011.

In recognition of his and the company’s efforts within the Education Sector Tim collected an award for the Most Supportive Employer at the IT Diploma awards evening.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk is a very demanding but rewarding walk, which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough all in one circular route. The walk is 24.5 miles long over a variety of terrains and takes in over 5,000 feet of climbing.

After monthly group training sessions at various locations including Brantingham, Millington and walking the Beverley 20 the group headed for the Yorkshire Peaks, on the hottest weekend of the year so far. Everyone pushed themselves in a great team building weekend and completed the walk with excellent individual times.

The next challenge is to collect all of the sponsorship promised in the hope we have reached our £1983 target. If you would like to make a donation to the RNLI through our sponsored walk webpage please follow this link.

Introducing New Faces To Our Successful Team

Laura joined us in late October 2008 and is part of our Customer Relations department. Laura will be the first point of call for our clients as they contact our office.

Pal joins our finance department as a Finance Assistant. Part of this role will be assisting the finance team with their daily routines, whilst building her knowledge and experience and working towards an AAT qualification.

Sam is our most recent recruit, joining early January 2009. He is an addition to our thriving new business sales team.
